NY to Argentina April 2009
We are 3 friends starting the fifties, 2 from Israel, one from the States, planning a trip starting from NY till Argentina during the first week of April 09, 2 bikes (R1150 and a Goldwing) + 4 wheels (probably a pickup), route is very flexible, planning budget type accommodations. just throwing this out there...
You know you will be going through Patagonia in/close to winter, right?

And to get a truck past the Darien Gap will take more time to organize than with the bikes... or will you ship them all in 1 container? Just this could add a month + to your trip.

Both bikes are great choices.

What are "budget accommodations" to you? Remember places with a garage usually charge more than the shoestring hostals.

Sorry to be a 'half empty' kind'a guy, just want to point out some logistical problems you might face. I would love to travel with a friend who had a truck. It would negate allot of issues.

And 16" rims on the truck will make things easier, btw. And a large transmission cooler too, if it is an automatic. Actually, try to find some of the HUBB people that overland in trucks, see what mod's they do that might apply to your trip.

Try to learn spanish before you leave.

Hi Jeff, thanks for the useful information , we are gathering the needed information , advices , might adjust the time , path (maybe to go first to Brazil than to continue to the south around December ) , are you familiar with ‘tested’ ‘Pan American route’ ?
Will appreciated any additional advice , ‘what to do’ and ‘not to do’ recommendations

There is a book called "The Adventure Motorcycle Handbook" by Chris Scot. It has a section on South America and mentions 4x4's as well. It is a great book to get you started. (There is even a section about traveling with friends...)

I have not been on the Pan American Highway very much. However, what I have seen of it, it is paved very well. You will have no problem with your bikes.

The Brazilian Real ($) is supposed to lose some value in the next year, it will make your trip a bit cheaper, should you decide to spend some time there.

Myself and a bunch of other people on the HUBB have websites which you can look at for info as well - click on their user name, look in there public profile and their website should be listed. (or did you know already?)

There are allot of "to do's". Honestly though, you will figure them out as you go. Of course, a guide book and some good maps will help.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
