Partner for U.S. to South America/Ushuaia Sept. 2004
I’m looking for a partner for a ride to Ushuaia (and back). Plan to leave San Francisco in September 2004 to arrive in Ushuaia for the December summer.

I’m modifying a 2002 KLR650 for the journey. It will be my first ride thru Central and South America, though I’ve been thru 47 states including Alaska. Male, 42. Began my planning about a month ago. Thanks to Horizons Unlimited and the rest of the Web for all the terrific info!

Have in mind the conventional route -- Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina. Debating the return trip, maybe thru Brazil to Venezuela and air cargo the bikes to Miami or Houston.

BigJoe had a similar post on Nov. 4, but not a lot happening on that thread. BigJoe, need your email! Anyone interested? Hit me up...

Good luck to ColoSabreRider with the January 2004 departure, too bad our schedules don’t coincide.

howdy, I'm planning on leaving AK in Aug. headed at a southerly direction. male, 28 have a KTM adve. but am driving to midwest US in Dec. to purchase another machine. either GS BMW or KLR650, leaning heavy towards the KLR.
no real itenary yet, only would like to be in Ushuaia by new year. your schedule sounds like we could do a lot of travelling together. should be coming through your neck of the woods right around your departure time. are you planning on getting a carnet?

Olee, you do NOT need a carnet for North/South/Central America.

Just reply to BigJoe's thread, he'll get the notice assuming he's smart enough to tick the box that says send email when there's a post! And I'm sure he is...

Sounds great. I’m pretty flexible on route, like you the objective is to make Ushuaia for the new year. I debated between the GS and KLR as well. Went with the KLR because at 331 lbs. it’s a lot lighter, less expensive, and a lot more wrenchable -- easier to repair. Found a 2002 KLR with 3k miles for $3750 and give it big time thumbs up.

Dunno about the carnet business. Is it required? One more thing to figure out.

Also, anyone have suggestions on the best C. & S. America country maps? Berndtson & Berndtson looks good ... they’re laminated but still seem to fold well for tankbag. Thanks ~~

grant thanks for the reasurrance I do not need a carnet. what kind of insurance provider would you recommend?
ride far-have you bought bags for your KLR yet? you can prob. still ride in san fran can't you. we got pounded with some good snow up here finally, not that I'm complaining as it's a good time to start planning a nice long ride and having a sno-go {almost} makes up the lack of motorcycling.
I think I'll be looking for a 2000 or newer KLR with low miles, sounds like you did good on yours.

I am leaving for SA in the fall of 2004. I have no plan. My Spanish is shit so I need a language school in ????. I am 58, an old dirt biker. I am an RN. I ride an '83 BMW R80G/S-ST. I plan to fish trout so eventually the streams in Chile and Argentina will claim me. I sure would like to get to the end of the road. Want an old guy along?? Bill bb@klinktech.net

I'm leaving in August '04 to do a similiar trip. I am planning on taking a little more time throughout Central America and also want to go to the Galapogos. So I will not make it to Ushuaia until the beginning of February. But I would like to keep in touch so we could maybe hook up at some time. Take care, Jake

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
