Riders Wanted. Turkey to Mongolia. Aug 08
Hello
My neighbour and I will be riding from Turkey to Mongolia over six weeks, from 10th August to 20th September 2008. For work reasons we are locked into this general time line. We would like to find two (or so) other adventurous souls to join us.

We are middle aged Canadians (I'm 52) with some biking expirience. I've done Africa and Glen... well he is a great rider. We will be riding dual sport bikes (650 & 450) and plan on taking the road less traveled, probably averaging about 300 km / day. We start in Istanbul, pass through Georgia, Azerbaijhan, the 4 Stans, southern Siberia (Russia) and then on to Ulaanbaatr in Mongolia.

Where practical we will stay in local hotels / hostels & yurts. But we do expect to spend a couple of nights out, particularly in Mongolia. The trip should be laid back with most of the riding being done in the mornings / early afternoon.

Hey there,

Yes that sounds like a good ride, I have my bike in Africa now and maybe able to come up through Egypt and meet you guys. I am on a R1200 with Mid East plates so I don't think that will be a problem at all?

Please send me your schedule so I could take a look. I have done some work in Mongolia as well so know a little about the country.

Here is our planned schedule.
Arrive Turkey 10th
Pick up the bikes 11th (Air Freight)
Depart 13th. Drive a "V" shape through Turkey. Get as far south as Urgup.

Georgia, 19th
Azrebaijhan, 21st
Ferry crossing 23rd
Turmenistan 24th
Uzebekistan 27th
Kyrgyzstan 30th (to Karakol)
Kazakhstan 2nd (up to Semey in the North, skip the capital))
Russia 5th
Mongolia 8th to 20th September.

Bikes are a KLR 650 and a Honda 450
Traveling fairly light
Rigid luggage
No dates are cast in stone (except start and stop).
Play it by ear.

ahead of you
Greetings,
I'm planning on the same general route, but I will be leaving Turkey about
five weeks ahead of you and plan to take more time exploring the "Stans".
After riding around in Mongolia, I will head through Western China to
Tibet and into Nepal.
I'm on a KTM 990 have a good deal of adventure travel experience and
will be riding in Europe for four months prior to leaving for the East.
So maybe we will run into each other along the way.
hoy Dingo if your schedule allows you to leave in early July I would be
happy for some company.
Will also be looking for off the beaten track routes, the more dirt the better.

I got to ask you, how do you plan on crossing China?
If you got a definate way, we may be interested in doing a bit of Nepal as well.
Are you aranging plates and a drivers lisence ahead of time?

China Crossing
Hi Peter,
Check out Redboots posts on crossing China.
I think he's just crossed over the kkh after a complicated
border paperwork event.
There have been several other HU posts from riders touring in Western China and Tibet. Crossing to Nepal might be challenging,
but I know there are motorcycle tours coming from Nepal
into Tibet. Friends who run guide services in Nepal and Tibet
think the crossing to Nepal is doable with the proper paper work
( visas, carnet etc.)

We had to delay our trip. Now we plan on going in early August, 2009.
Glen had an unavoidable issue that he had to look after.

well now i've actually worked out how to use the hubb and found your reply.

i'm in greece at the moment and my mate has lost his passport and visa's, so was desperate to get in touch. sorry that you've had to delay, but would have worked really well with me now. . . shame, good luck next year.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
