Hi Russ,
When is your arrival date in Turkey? Actually do you have a rough plan on time base?

Hi,
I'm probably going to get to Turkey around the end of April, i don't have a definate date as i'm in the process of selling my flat so whenever that goes through. I've also just been rejected for an Iranian visa today so i may have to look at going through Georgia and Azabajan rather than Iran.

Heading for Vlad
Hi,
I am hoping to travel through Kyrgystan and Kazakhstan towards Vlad via Mongolia during July this summer.
Can anyone advise me as to how long it will take to travel from Kazakhstan to Vlad?
I hope to reach there as quickly (and safetly) as possible.
Also am I mad to try to cross western mongolia alone?
Would it be safer for a lone traveller like me to head further north in Russia and catch the highway to Vlad rather than going solo through Western Mongolia towards UB?
I also want to fly to USA once I reach Vlad so perhaps may meet up with some of you along the way.
I hope to reach Vlad by the 2nd or 3rd week of July if possible.
Thanks a bunch,

I know this topic has been dormant for a few weeks but just noticed this. I read on the Lonely Planet forum the other night that the Russian border region with Western Mongolia in the Altai Mountains is a restricted area and you need to apply for a special permit to go there, which as of November last year needs to be applied for 2 months in advance!
Now I was hoping to enter Mongolia there and transit across it, but if that's true then it ain't possible! If anyone knows anything more about this, especially recent first hand experience of doing it, then I'd be most interested in hearing it.

Hi Russ,
World is really so small. I was together with Ollie and Jenny in Yazd - Iran. Now, I'm in Qasvin and heading towards north to Azerbaijan border. I also have Turkmenistan visa problem and possibly prefer ferry from Baku to Aktau. Jenny and Ollie will stay a couple of days in Tehran and will also come to Baku.
Hope to see you and safe ride...

After the fact...
I'm posting just for the records as I noticed this thread too late.
I started from LA, following the same route via stans. Currently in UB. Heading to Vlad soon. Still hoping to attend the California Metting 23 days from today...

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
