Two to three weeks is not very long to do your trip. While you can travel the distance wont you want to see what's in between? You may have your reasons but perhaps you think about exploring just one country. It certainly could make it more memorable that way.

Green card into Serbia cost us about £80 but that was after they tried to charge us about £150. I would advise to get the green card before you get to the border because they will hold your passport while you get it. Have fun!

As of January 1st 2012 Serbia is part of EU insurance program and they are not asking for green card at the border any more. Now, that is official story. I called a friend of mine who is a customs agent at the big border crossing between Hungary and Serbia and confirmed that no insurance will be asked from me even after I explained him more than once that my motorcycle is registered in the US. They are all very confused at the moment. If your vehicle is registered anywhere in the EU you are good to go. If outside of EU you still need green card and Serbia is covered with the rest of the counties. I will be crossing that border in July with my US bike and than we will see…

as mentioned above, doing that trip and covering those countries in 3 weeks will leave little time for you to see the "real" life n the countries you are passing through

It may be worth considering spening more time in a couple, and "transiting" through some of the others. I always prefer to avoid the motorways and major routes and stay on the local and "b" grade roads. That way you will get to see the real culture and people in each country, and not tarmac and service stations !

So, taking the quote below as being up to date then you need to look at the schedule of countries that is listed on the UK insurance policy that you have; this may need to be updated if your policy has been in place for a while (as in longer than before 1 Jan 2012). Thing is that insurance companies no longer issue green cards, as a rule, because of the over-arching EU law which makes all EU insurance companies provide minimum standards of cover (aka green card cover) that is valid no matter where you are travelling - open borders theory.

Changed plans

I am traveling from Athens to the UK at the end of June.
I had planned going the FYOM, Serbia etc route.
But being on a budget I thought F##k paying for "Green Card" at all the borders .
The total would have been about 90/100 euro's or, in other words - a few tanks of gas.
So I have now planned to go through Romainia.
Route now set in stone, Transfaragas Highway then pop in to visit Count Dracula,
sorted

WALKABOUTe absolutely correct. There are still lots of confusion at the borders and with insurance companies. Basically, if your vehicle is registered anywhere in EU you are covered for Serbia. All they want to see is valid registration. Liability insurance is part of vehicle registration. Now, if you are registered outside of EU (USA, CANADA..) you are not covered and still need the green card, not just for Serbia but for all other countries in EU.

RORY799 you should be good to go thru Serbia…

To late for Serbia

Yes, I can see that Serbia is now " good to go" , but I'm kind of looking forward to Romainia now.
