Uk to oz, on the road

hey after years of planning we are on the boat out of northern ireland and later onto our last boat for several months. we'd be happy to meet anyone who is about on the way or perhaps travel a bit of the way together. we are on an f650gs and a diesel converted (!) triumph tiger. sticking to black stuff (roads not guiness) where possible and taking it easy. thanks to everyone who made it possible.

Neil

Plans are unfolding as we go. Got 8 months to get to aus, currently in Germany paying a lot for hotels. Should have got a list of campsites sorted before we left . Heading through Frankfurt, Wurzburg, then onto Austria.

If you're wanting camp and have a satnav with you, this might be worth a look if you haven't tried it:

ARCHIESCAMPINGS

It has downloads for most satnavs of european campsites as POIs. Very quick and easy to find a campsite near wherever you happen to be at the end of the day once it's loaded onto your satnav.

Thanks for the tip Zenarchy. We got this file before we left and I have it on my phone but the software wont display the POI´s. Theres always something you should have tested before leaving! Currently keeping an eye out for cheap satnav though we hope not to be in europe for long anyhow ($$$)

Ah..Sorry to hear that.

Does your phone not support POI's at all, or is it just that they're in the wrong format?

If it has it's own POI format, perhaps there's a tool that'll convert them. I know Tyre (Tyre) will convert poi files to xml files. There may be some converter that'll covert the archies poi into a format that your phone would use.

Forgive me for stating the obvious if you've already tried this (you probably have but thought I'd mention it just incase).

Good luck with your trip I bet it'll be amazing (would love to do the same thing myself one day!).

I should have mentioned it is an Android phone I am using. Was persuaded to buy it by a friend before we left. Decent at most things, better than my windows mobile for sure but fell over at POIs. Am using an app called Big Planet Tracks which does not seem to do any POIs. I also have RMAPS which crashes a lot and does nothing with the POI files (says loading and then nothing). Have also heard of GPS Babel and all to convert file formats but seems that my software is the issue. Ho hum. but thanks again.

While touring so many places isn't it becmoing a pain to pay more to stay in hotels. Why don't you contact a travel agent and ask them to sponsor your tour or at least help you to book hotels at much discounted price. The only thing they may want from you is to carry a logo of their brand. But that will be a lot of savings.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
