Hi James,
For the time being it is extremely difficult to get into Yemen overland. Only the coastal border seems to be operational at this point. But there is hardly any reliable information as to whether the border is open for third counties' citizens as well.
In addition, it seems that only the coastal road is halfway safe for overland travel. It is highly dangerous on any road to go from the coast up to the capital Sana'a!
On another note, it seems that pirates are getting deep into the waters of the Red Sea now - which would make any dhouw that plies the route from the Yemeni port of Mokka to Djibouti a perfect bounty.
Therefore, I would strongly recommend to ship the car from Aqaba to Djibouti or to go by ferry from Jeddah to Suakin in Sudan by ferry. It seems there are two companies operating this route. Reports also say that bureaucracy is rather straight forward on this route.
Best
Achim

RHD or LHD?
Just tried to crossed Saudi in a RHD and it is not allowed, had to pay many hundreds of dollars to be transited on a truck.
Only Khartoum embassy will issue you the 3 days transit visa, after a fight.
Ferry to Jeddah was fine - $150 for one person, cabin and 4x4. took 6 hours to do all the port bullshit in Suakin. Saudi side very professional, easy if LHD, not worth it if RHD.
Saudi people not easy to deal with at the embassy etc
When I was in Somaliland there were boats going from Berbera to Yemen etc.
