Africa: Insurance & Licence
Hi all,
Riding whole of the west coast of Africa starting later this year (bigtrip19.blogspot.co.uk).
What's the definitive advice re licence and insurance? Will an IDP and buy-on-the-border-as-you-go insurance take us all the way?
Cheers,
Simon

Based on my experience (now in Namibia): Yes.
If you can get UK cover for Morocco it’s better and easier to do so.
Some countries eg Angola never mentioned or asked for insurance.
Some regions have a common insurance eg carte brune, carte rose.
Simon
PS All advice disclaimed after 29 March as regards Europe

Hi again, Simon,
Thanks.
I know of Carte Brune (hadn't come across Carte Rose), but you can get away without them?
You must suggest some destinations. You're travelling our route!
Cheers,

But the Carte Brune and Rose are acquired at the relevant borders? Or elsewhere?

Varies by country. Suggest you Search this forum and look at ioverlander maps (it's an invaluable app).

I would also advise getting these. It’s a scheme that covers a lot of countries and perhaps because of that is relatively well know and understood within them. These were asked for on a few occasions.

Sorry! Misread acquired as required. You should be able to get both together in St. Louis. Else if only Brune I have a contact in Benin who can give you Carte Rose but minimum 12 months.

In fall of 2015 I bought insurance for Senegal and surrounding countries at a little office in Rosso just before crossing into Senegal. 5 mins paperwork, about 60 euro's if I recall correctly. A4 sized yellow form.

I usually check various plans at insurance marketplaces like https://www.aardvarkcompare.com but the problem with services like these is that they offer insurance by country. so when I was traveling to just one place, getting details on possible insurance plans there can save you a few dozen of $$$ but i guess you can always choose the insurance company with best rates and ask them whether they've got plans that cover a trip to a bunch of countries
anyways..have an an awesome and accident-free ride
