Africa North to South COMESA
Hi
I'm entering Africa via Egypt and travelling south via sudan, ethiopia and east africa to RSA. Does anyone know the northernmost country in which I can purchase COMESA insurance and how much it is likely to cost. I dont want to get fleeced by a dodgy broker.
Cheers
David

Although Egypt is a member of Comesa, to my knowledge, they have not signed up to the yellow card insurance scheme.
Therefore Sudan will be the northern-most country that participates in the yellow card scheme, however I have no info on where you could buy one or expected costs. I am sure one of the Mahir brothers in Wadi Halfa can point you in the right direction.
This has some more info:

Early last year a small group of us were travelling south from Egypt. In Khartoum we found an insurance agent that sells Comesa, but we all decided it was too expensive.
Continuing on south separately, I waited until Nairobi, and went to an agent whose business card was on the noticeboard at Jungle Junction.
After phoning a couple of underwriters she found one that would give me a year, with none of the countries crossed off of the list printed on the card. I thought the price was OK so bought that. From memory it was about GBP100. (But valid 12 months).
The first underwriter she phoned would only give me a month or two - not enough for me.
I later met one of the members of the previous group, who bought COMESA in Addis Ababa at a place recommended by Wim (Wim's Holland Place).
It was for a shorter period and fewer countries, but it looked as though Addis might be a cheaper place to buy than Nairobi.
Hope that helps. Have a great trip.
