Australian bike out of Australia to South America
Hello
I am about to import my Africa twin into Australia as my carnet is about to run out for the last time (I have kept it here 3 years and I have been told no more...hence importing it-cheaper than sending it out the country and back again.) However I am going to be shipping it to south America and the rest of the world after than in about a year and a half's time.
How does it go with Australian bikes out the country...what about the rego, do you have to keep it up while I am away. and how does it go with maybe re importing it to the UK when I eventually get back?
Thanks in advance
George

Hi George,
Sorry I can't help with the bike question but I was talking about you this morning with a Canadian who was in the backpackers here in Batumi, Georgia.
He was with you in Lahore when they bombed the place next door and I am the cyclist who was talking to you while you had breakfast just off of Khosan road they day after you pick up your bike up from the airport, small world.
Yes alright

Hi George,
I took my 4x4 truck out of OZ in 2006, and it’s still outside of the country. Every year I go online and pay the rego, no prob.
The rego sticker is being mailed to a friend of mine, and she’s then forwarding it to me. I even have a Carnet for it now, as it’s in Africa.
If you want to keep it legal and be able to take out insurance, then you will have to pay in OZ.
Also, if you will need a Carnet from OZ, then they will ask for the rego.
In all the time since 2006, travelling as far as Mongolia, nobody has ever asked me for the rego!
Beauty is that if you pay you are legal……but you’ll never see the speeding/parking or whatever fines….
The trucks rego is from QLD, which is great as you don’t have to get it inspected, ever.
Not all the states in OZ are like that.
I did a 3 year RTW trip in the early 90 ties on a Honda Dominator. South America is excellent, you’ll have a lot of fun.
Beware that the southern part gets really cold, timing is everything!
Cheers, Ib.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
