Your Canadian bike insurance ends when you cross into Mexico. You may (in many cases, you must) buy insurance at border crossings specific to each country. However, it's best to assume that you have no insurance... even if you bought it. Collecting on a claim might be difficult.

I'm heading south from Washington State to the bottom of SA too.
Is it worth buying Central and South American liability insurance now - $650 for 6 months worth? Or, should I just buy at the boarders as required? Or what?
I already have purchased insurance for Mexico.

You cannot buy one single insurance that will cover you all the way.
Some countries demand that you buy their insurance. Someplaces an insurance wont help. Most countries below USA don't care.
Many people travel all the way without insurance at all.

Insurance
Hi ,
You can get insurance to cover most countries at quite reasonable pricing but it won't cover all countries. Get your insurance in Columbia for Columbia. They do check for it. Got stopped once at a big road block in the mountains but once they saw my paper work was in order all was good. Had a great visit with the police. They introduced me to some local Cuisine over lunch.
Have a great ride,
I did.

I'm in Buenos Aires now and - I hope - collecting my bike from the shippers warehouse tomorrow. Just to clarify - anybody know where I can get the minimum legally required 3rd party insurance for Argentina, or will it never be asked for? If they don't care whether I've got it or not, then nor do I, but I'd rather not get my bum slung in jail.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
