Bike insurance??
Just want to check my understanding of overland insurance.
1) You should get travel insurance that covers travel by motorcycle. This usually covers medical / some personal possessions etc.
2) You can't get 3rd party / specific motorcycle insurance beyond the borders of Europe (if heading to Asia overland). Instead yopu buy it as you go at the border of each country.
Key Q: How do you insure your bike against theft. I.e. if it gets robbed whaen you are in the middle of Asia, is that it or are there ways of insuring?
Thanks,
David

Yes, you ar right. Get personla cover (Try Navigator Travel - they will cover you) And buy insurance for the bike on the border. Basically, this will be worthless but you have to buy it. I guess if your bike is stolen you're stuffed, unless you happen to be in country where the insurnace you bought on the border actually means something.

What George said
That's why a lot of folks choose to travel on less-than-new machinery (though there may still be considerable investment in it).
Its also less ostentatious in poorer parts.
How much are you prepared to loose...

In most places I've been it's not too hard to find secure parking for the night, either at the hotel or somewhere nearby. Also in many of these areas bikes like this are extremely rare so pretty noticeable/trackable/hard to sell. If you take sensible precautions you hopefully won't have a problem.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
