Hi Matt
Riding in the Middle East is great you only have to be prepared .
as a tourist you can buy a bike free of taxes in lebanon but crossing borders here needs Carne' papers and that can be done while buying the bike. the problem is that you will wast time wating for the process to end.
you can't cross from Lebanon to israel. so the route i recomend is: from lebanon north to syria and then to turkey via the coast trail. go east in turkey to Haran (Abraham's birth place) then enter syria again and cross it to the jordan border go south to Petra then cross the red sea on a ferry from Aqaba to Sinai it is a day ride to Cairo and the piramids. then ride to Alexandrya and via the coast road go west to marsa matroch and Salum to the Libyan border. you can take a day ride to one of the Sahara oasiss (Siwa) then go back east to Egypt and to israel. be sure that israel is the last stamp in your passport. from here you can leav by sea to europe
