Hi Jasper,
For the Ukraine, a carnet is definitely not needed at present - just the original bike papers (they log the bike registration number in your passport)
For Russia, a carnet used to be necessary (2 years ago), but I'm not sure of the current situation.

Never heard about carnet supposedly needed in Russia. I crossed it twice last year and did not need anything beside my driving license and registration. There will be quite a lot of paperwork (temporary import, liability insurance, customs declaration, migration card) but all of it will be handled at the border except for the insurance that should be available right before the border.
You don't need anything special for Ukraine either.

Like Ghost Rider said, no carnet needed for Ukraine. I went through there last summer, no carnet was asked for - the licence plate and moto description was entered into my passport, on the same page as the entry stamp, and it was checked when I left the country.

I was there in June and no entry was made in the passport. They give you a small form with the bike details copied from you registration docs. Hand it in on departure.

When I was crossing Ukraine in eastwards direction I got the stamp mentioned by PanEuropean. On the way back, just 5 weeks later, I got a custom declaration form mentioned by RedBoots :-))). Happened in October 2006.
Good luck,
Kris

This is is what you need to buy a bike in Japan
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...ghlight=buying
Is your dead bike still in Japan?
I think you will have to ship it back home or you won't get back the deposit for your Carnet as I assume you used one to bring it into Japan.

carnet for russia
No you do not need for Russia, i am here now in moscow, we came through border from Estonia 6 days ago, it is a 5 check point senario, takes about two hours, all you need is original papers for bike registration and passport, you can pay 3rd party insurance at border. approx 600 rubbles for two weeks, NOT Much

Thanks a lot for all the info - much appreciated.
Chris, in case your interested, I didn't have to re-export my irrepareable bike. I had to have it destroyed and produce a certificate for customs saying it had been done. Cost 50,000 yen - a lot i thought but I had little choice.
Japanese customs then told me they wouldn't allow me to get my carnet deposit back but when I argued with them (I was outraged) they backed down so hopefully it'll be alright when I apply for it back off the RAC.
cheers.
