Carnet question
I am planning a RTW trip on my Australian registered V-Strom 650, starting in Australia and then on to New Zealand and South/Central America before heading over to Europe and Africa. I expect the trip to last 12-15 months.
I will obviously need a carnet for certain parts of the trip, but am happy to deposit a bond of 12.5% whilst in New Zealand. My question is whether I can get my carnet in Australia, but not have it commence until about 4 or 5 months later, so that it will be active for when I arrive in the countries where it is essential?

probably...
I've used 2 carnets on my trip and both of the issuers (CAA and ADAC) asked when I wanted the carnet to "commence." I would imagine your issuer will be the same. Good luck, H.

Not sure about a carnet issued in Oz, but my carnet, issued from the UK did not start until 3 months after it was issued.

You may 'only' need the carnet for Africa.. Any carnet is 'only' valid for 12 months .. so making it start at some date that will cover your finish date would be good. If you need to go over 12 months then you'll need a second carnet to follow the first.
It will be organised through your local motoring orgainisation (NRMA, RAC etc) but it goes to a central body (AAA ? or AA) any you can talk to them directly to get the information you need .. I think they will do what you need .. a delayed start date on the carnet. But do get it organised before you leave.

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
