Carnet, Registration & Drivers License Question

I am currently living and working in South Korea and have a Korean registered Motorcycle (registered in my name). Also I have an Australian drivers license. I am planning a trip from Korea to the UK and noted that a Carnet is required for Iran.

Questions:

1. Has anyone got any experience with obtaining a Carnet in South Korea?

2. My bike registration is Korean, my drivers license is Australian. Could this cause any problems at border crossings?

Can't answer qu 1.

Ref qu 2: What driving licence you have is irrelevant at all borders. If your passport is correct (visa etc), immigration will let you in. If your bike papers are correct (registration/carnet etc), customs will let your bike in.

The only people who ever checked my drivers licence were (usually dubious Kazakh) police at the roadside who didn't realise they were looking at scanned copies of my DL/reg docs. Might also be an idea to get an international DL that is easily understandable and "confiscatable" if you meet a dodgy fat Kazakh copper.

Hi Chris

Thanks for confirmation of drivers license. Also good idea for the copies on hand to show in the first instance. I have some experience of that region as I worked and lived in Turkmenistan for 18 months. A bit dodgy there too!

I'm behind the camera. The fat pig in the middle had the ego to mess with us for over an hour and still think we were his friends for a happy picture. He reckoned we were speeding when we definitely weren't. No money changed hands.

Good to hear it ended well. What do you think about traveling vladivostok to Europe alone? Of course much safer with a companion or 2 for breakdowns, falls etc, but I don't know anyone to travel with.

Lots of people ride this on their own. You'll also meet people including locals on the way. Or put up a message in the Travellers seeking travellers section.

If you stayed north of Iran you wouldn't need a carnet. Just ship the bike to Vladivostok and ride into the sun for 3 months.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
