Carnets - are they transferable?
Hi All!
I've been looking at 4x4s for a trans-Africa trip and have noticed that some are advertised with carnets attached - ie the carnet originally procured for the vehicle still has a few months or whatever to run.
So how does that work then? Given that the person who originally bought the carnet must have put up a bank guarantee or sizeable deposit to secure it, how does the carnet then get transferred to another driver? Surely the vehicle sellers don't want to be held accountable and lose their deposit if the next driver doesn't execute the carnet properly... or is there some process by which the carnet is transferred into another person's name and they then pay an additional premium or something?
Just confused as the carnet seems to be being used as an additional selling-point for a vehicle and my first reaction is "Brilliant, saves me some money!" - but when I think about it, I don't understand how it would work practically...
