China to Indonesia route ?

Hi there,
i'm planing trip from Europe to Australia, but cannot figure out which way to take from China to south asia. Wanted to go through mainland of China to Hong Kong and Vietnam, Laos etc. but it seems it's not possible, because Chinese won't allow it. It seems i'll have to go to India or Pakistan ... then what. I guess some of you know and i would appreciate your ideas. Thank you very much, Roman D.

These things have been widely discussed on these boards (check out Route planning & SE Asia, and you'll find).

Short version: Burma is practically impossible, so the only option is via China, but it's very expensive, and you need to arrange it months in advance. Foreign vehicles into Vietnam is also very tough, but you can go to Laos. Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia are all relatively easily do-able in that region.

You might be able to cross into Laos direct from China. I know when I was planning my trip (cancelled due to wife's illness) the Chinese travel agency had me crossing from Laos to Yunnan. There is probably an "approved" crossing for foreigners from China to Vietnam but I don't know what it is.
The crossing in Yunnan is at Mohan.

I am doing it overland and to do China, we got a group of 6 bikers and one 4wd, they can carry the 'required' guide and this brought the cost down to 1500US each, for a 35 day tour including Tibet and finishing Laos.

And yes, this was planned ages ago, months and I do not enter until late August, have already paid 2/3rds up front and have yet to get my visa(still outside the 3 months time limit)

Cheers
TS

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
