ensurance out of Europe with a Belgium motorbike

edit: shoud be insurance instead of ensurance I tink;

Hi,

I made a (big) mistake not checking this out before I started.
I have a Belgium bike and going to Senegal. My normal ensurance that I have in belgium covers also Marokko, where I actually am now.
no problem so far, unless my present ensurance ends at the 6th of januari :s

-I can ask my present ensurance to send me the new document for 2015 and hope it will arrive soon. BUT, due to some ccontract changes, I have to pay double of it, like 600€.

-question is, do I need this, if I am going to ride in countries where this ensurance even don't cover me?! I have to take insurance in Mauretania en Senegal however, so why pay 600€ for an ensurance that does not cover me where I am?!

And if I do need an ensurance (=green card) what is the best option?
I saw the sticky topic of 'where to get the cheapest green card', so I contacted the suggested company, and I am waiting for their answer...

I woud be really glad if someone had experience with this...

grtz from Marrakech,

Ratte

Are you going to be in Mauritania by the 6th? If you are just buy insurance there and let your Belgian insurance run out. If you're still in Morocco / W. Sahara you will need new insurance but you could just buy it locally. Or (just a suggestion - think the risks through yourself) you could just forget about it until you reach the Mauri border.

Could you find new suitable Belgian insurance (at a better price) by searching and then buying online. Many of the UK insurance companies don't send paper certificates any more - you get the documents as a PDF attached to an email. You could print that out.

Will your existing insurance company automatically renew the policy (and take the money as well) if you dont tell them to stop? That happens here (with car policies anyway)

How are you getting the bike back? If you're riding you'll need Euro insurance as soon as you get to Spain. I've air freighted a bike with no insurance back from W.Africa and collected it from the airport on a trailer - so no insurance needed.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
