financed vehicle to mexico?

i was wondering about driving a financed moto to copper canyon and then to mazatlan in mexico and have read that some lending institutions require a Letter of Authorization. is this required by the country of mexico or just by the bank? just trying to get it straight.

if so does the letter need to be notarized?

thanks sam

Pat's right, the Mexicans do not care about lien holders, but they do want to see your name on the registration and ownership. For that reason you may need to bring some form of documentation if there can be some doubt as to who actually owns the bike. You may wind up having to post a $400US cash bond which will be returned to you when you cancel the documents when leaving Mexico at end of trip.
The lien holder's agreeement may be the cause of problems for you at home if it forbids taking the vehicle out of the country without permission.Get clear on the rules and limitations in your financial agreements.

Hi folks, good info here, I appreciate it. I will be traveling to Mexico from California this spring as well. I am the "owner" of my bike, but I also have a loan on it.

Just to be darn clear, if there is a loan on the bike, state vehicle registration will suffice in place of a title? Assuming, the state vehicle registration and bike owner/rider all match. Correct?

Thanks for the help! (don't mean to hijack)

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
