Getting a carnet on the road!

Leaving Australia for South America Feb 2010 on the start of RTW. Info on the HUBB would seem to indicate that I don,t need a carnet for any countries in the Americas. Is this the case, and if so can an Aussie by a carnet in Europe for the trip down through Africa, where I understand it is necessary?
Would I have to return to Europe to wind up the carnet or could I ship back to Australia from Africa and settle the carnet by mail?

As I plan to be in the Americas for two years it appears crazy and bloody expensive to get a carnet that I won't get any value from for the first two years of my trip.

Any ideas on hoe to tackle this?

Thanks

I suggest you talk to your Auto club's carnet dept. I'm sure something can be arranged.

There's no requirement for Carnet anywhere in the Americas. You would just send the Carnet back to the issuing organisation at the end of the trip.

Hope that helps

Not sure how much help this will be to you, but in 2008 I met some French people who were able to get a French ATA carnet DHL'd out to them in Bangkok. Not sure of the procedure they followed, but I know it involved the French Embassy. I didn't pay a whole lot of attention to it because I already had my own.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
