Import permit Mexico for bike that you don't own
Hey,
In two months or so we'll be crossing the mex border from the US. I've been doing some reading up here on this temporary permit sticker that seems to be valid for six months and doesn't cost a whole lot. The thing is we'll be on two KTM's that we don't own as they're press bikes. Should we expect trouble at the border for that or do you who've gone there before think the officials won't even notice or ask?
Thanks
PS. of course we'll bring some letters from KTM saying that we are rightfully riding the bikes.

I've not done this myself. I'd assume that there are provisions for allowing this with 'some kinda official' paperwork. You may already have all that's needed.

I don´t know who gave you the bikes but wouldn´t it have been wise to check out border crossings and their requisites BEFORE you started off on this adventure? Most people here folow the ollowing route:
1.) Save money for trip
2.) PREPARE FOR TRIP
3.) Do trip
I don´t know where you are in the trip planning stages. Maybe you´ve got the bikes already. Anyway if you are stupid enough to ask this question and you are sure you are not a troll strolling in from another forum, then I wish you all the luck in the world and keep us posted on how you are doing.
P.s. What´s the next border crossing you´re planning. This might work out to be more exciting than the World Record Attempt we´ve all been closely following for awhile...

My best *guess*:
It would be handled the same way a leased bike or financed bike is handled at the border. Why don't you go to the consulate and ask.

Expect Trouble
My KTM 950 was regestered in my girl friends name (tax issues) and even though I had signed and noterised permision to use the bike and copies of
the title and all the other paper work needed the imagracion officals would
not give me the sticker. I was riding with a Mexican National and we
finally, a few hours later, convinced the offical to let me sign the copy of
the title in the buyers column to pretend I had just bought it. Go figure.
Since then I've ridden into Mexico several times and you will definatly need
the original title in your name, plus other required paper work.
Have fun MAX

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
