Carnet de Passage in Australia
Hi, I'm not in OZ at the moment, but when getting back going to be needing to get a Carnet de Passage for an older Landcruiser (value isn't over a few thousand). I've gotten a good idea about what I need to do, but havn't been able to figure out a price estimate. I know it has to do with countries you will be visiting. We will be going through the middle east towards Europe (I know Iran has highest percentage). Is there a formula I could use. If there is someone with experience or knowledge I would greatly appreciate the advice.
Cheers

The value estimate is the value of the vehicle in YOUR country.
It can be estimated by a dealer .. tell them you want the 'sell now' value that should be on the low side. The 'buy now' (as in quickly) would be the high side. You want the estimate in writing. Remember that the 'value' will decrease as you travel .. thus the low side now will be a realistic 'average' value over your trips time line.

If you can find a friendly licenced valuer you can get a wholesale value. You'll have to pay them but should save on the carnet costs.

Look at indemnity insurance option which is cheaper. Based on percentage of vehicle value and a small deposit returnable up returning Carnet and vehicle.

the value is one of the factors that determines how much of a deposit you will need to have made with your automobile association (the other being which countries you will visit). a lower value = a lower deposit, so try to get a dealer to value it as low as possible
from memory, heading in to iran requires the highest level of deposit with yur AA - this is 400% of the value. so say it is valued at $2000 - to go to iran you will need to deposit $8000 with the AA
yikes! this is heaps!
the good news is that a lot of AA's will issue an insurance policy to you, where you pay a percentage, rather than the whole value of the deposit. IIRC, ours was 2% of the deposit - so rather than paying $8000, you'd need to pay $160, which is much more doable
from memory, the deposit is refundable, while the insurance policy is not
there are then some further costs - documentation, fees etc - that you must pay the AA - I imagine that these vary from country to country
