Insurance: Is it always this hard?
I just called Carole Nash to get a green card for our forthcoming wander round 'Europe' that will definitely include Croatia, may include Bosnia and Turkey, might include Tunisia and Morocco and we were also thinking about Albania.
It would appear that my current insurer, Equity Red Star, won't cover any of those countries at all so I'll have to switch insurers if I want a green card. As I have a multibike policy the best option seems to be Norwich Union but they won't insure for Albania or Bosnia. If I want to go into either of those I'll have to go for a company which only does a single bike policy.
How hard is it to sort out insurance at the border? (I realise trying to make a claim on such a policy may be 'difficult')
Thanks.
Kevin

Ukraine
I have found Norwich Union fine for Europe, but only in terms of EU Europe. I cannot get insurance for Ukraine, but I have been told that this can be purchased at the border. Has anyone any info on this. Thanks, Gill

I've never had a problem getting insurance at the border of ukraine or anywhere else, as long as its not some small outpost type border that gets 4-5 people crossing per day. (this happened to me once crossing into serbia from MK) If you go down the croatian coast, you only go thru about 20km of bosnia, dont worry about Ins. there, as they have never asked me for it. Last year, I think ALB ins cost me about $30? for a month.
serbia is expensive, about 100$ for a month, macedonia, 50 euros for 2 weeks. Ukraine was about 25$ a month.
Im in Bulgaria for the summer, and can get normal green card just for EU for about 40 a month. or I can get green card that covers everywhere for about 125 a month, on my US registered bike.
Hope that helps
Doug

Thanks for the responses and sorry for my tardy reply. I thought I had the forum set up to notify me by email when there were replies but I guess I didn't.
We'll be heading towards Istanbul starting in Dubrovnik. I've now switched my insurance to NU and have cover for all countries we're going to except Bosnia and Serbia which they won't insure for (it might have been nice to go to Montenegro just for a look but I'm not hung up about it.
Jerome, I've just had a look at the Tourinsure web site. We're leaving on Friday and I don't think I'll be able to complete the required interactions with them in time for them to get the green card to me but thanks for the pointer.
Doug, it sounds like I'll be able to get what I need as we go through the borders so we'll give it a go and just play it by ear. Thanks for the information.
