Insurance and license requirements in South America

Hello,

I have a full Irish drivers license which, in Ireland, entitles me to drive a motorbike up to 200cc, however it doesn´t mention this on the actual document. It is essentially just a car license. Is this sufficient for the likes of Peru, Argentina, Bolivia?

Also, what sort of insurance cover should I look for here, or do I need any?

You could show them a blockbuster video rental card and they wouldn't know the difference...

But... Officially, you do need a licence. They WONT check with Ireland the size of bike you can ride so I think it will be fine.

Officially, you're meant to have an international driving licence too which no one will ever check or ask for but they're cheap and easy to obtain so you might as well.

I think you're required to get at least 3rd party insurance but most people just show them any old document. You can buy "Sur Assure" which covers quite a lot of countries in Argentina, bsas !

Purchasing insurance is a personal decision that only you can make. There are several threads here about those that have bought and those that haven't purchased insurance.

Regarding the size limitation of the motorcycle, it more than likely will never be checked or any document can be made to look the way you want it to look - if you know what I mean.

We are just back from a trip in ARG,BOL,CHI and URU.
we had to show our intern driver licence 2x and assurace many times
In BA we took assurance with Federacion Patronal. Not to expensive and the cover all mercosur countries ( we payed for 2 countries but the police told us is was good for all mercosur countries ! ) very handy...

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
