Insure an Australian moped in Asia
Hi there,
I'm travelling with a postie bike ( honda ct110) from Australia to Belgium, I'm gonna soon start the Asian part of the trip. The bike is registered in Australia ( I'll keep it ) but the Australian insurance stop outside the country. Do I need to subscribe to an insurance in Timor Leste, indonedia, Malaysia, Thailand, Nepal, India, Pakistan and Iran ?
Thanks !!
Nick.

Most likely you will be forced/compelled to buy insurance at the border of each country. Usually not so bad.

Problem is some countries don't actually check at the border that you have appropriate liability insurance even when they say it is compulsory, so of course some travellers interpret that to mean it isn't required and blithely ride through high risk areas without insurance to cover any locals they injure or kill. Other countries, checks are made by internal police rather than at the borders, so not having required insurance leaves you liable to extortion or genuine fines. In others the crunch comes once you have an accident and the way they sort things out is to put you in prison until liability and damages have been determined.
Compounding the issue is that short-term insurance can be almost impossible to get so unless you can find international coverage you are left with no choice but to travel uninsured

Sooo does anyone have useful information. I know you can buy insurance for Thailand near the border crossings, at store of petrol stations and for Laos at the border crossing, ( Laos insurance is by Allianez and Allianez does some of my insurance at home so I rang them to see if they did multiple countries as it wouldn't be short term if you're travelling multiple countries, no go that would be to easy. These companies just don't know how to please a customer.

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
