What did you do in the several countries which don't allow entry without buying insurance first? And did you really ride through the USA without insurance? Sheesh.
To the OP: there is no single insurance, and specific answers depend on what countries you're riding in. Start with Mercosur insurance, which you can buy easily in Santiago as indicated above--it covers the southern tier countries.
Hope that's helpful.

In 2 countries in Central America (costa Rica and nicaragua) we bought it at the border because we had no choice. I think we it was 17 and 35 dollars. It is very easy, the explain you where to go, you pay, take a few copies and ready.
At the border between Costa Rica and Nicagragua we took an "official guide" wich was not a bad idea, because there it is quite confusing. We tipt him 2 dollars.
Yes, we spend a month in USA, without insurance. Stopt once by the higwaypatrol, but they didn't asked for papers,
Btw, we wouldn't do that any more!

Hi Micheal,
I rode Chile early this year 2012) without insurance. A local biker I spoke told me " you dont need insurance for bike but car". For Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia and Peru (countries which I rode) all require insurance.

My wife and I will be in Santiago jan 9th. The bike air freight on the 8th. If you get the bike permit and insurance figured out before the I would love to know. We plan to spend some time in chile and Argentina then head north.
Are you shipping by air also?

Hi!
Has anyone got a definitive answer about insurance in Peru, Chile, Bolivia and Argentina and where to go to get it please? I am leaving for Chile in 2 weeks and would really appreciate some help.
Cheers Sam
