passport full
I'm planning a trip from the USA to Ushuaia and back, and am concerned about having enough room in my passport for all the stamps required. What happens if I run out of room? Do I need a new passport? Should I get one before I leave?

Can't speak for the US, but in Canada you can request a passport with more pages, it does cost extra, but then no risk of running out of pages. I think the US has a similar option. If you already have a passport, make sure it's valid for 6 months beyond your expected return, just to avoid hassles.
If you do run out of pages, you will be able to get a replacement passport at a US Embassy in the capital city of virtually every country, but it might require spending up to a week waiting for it! So, better to have a new passport with lots of pages to start with.

I just got a new passport for exactly that reason. The last time I left an airport, I got into kaka since the anally retentive German customs guy couldn't exit stamp my passport, since I was out of room and had used page 24 for emergency contact info. But it was September 11, and no one really cared after that.... we were the last plane to leave German airspace. When we landed in Vancouver, I looked out the window and thought: "Wow, tourism in BC is doing well .. so many planes here". Little did we know ... pilot parked the plane and told us what had happened. When I got home, I plonked myself in front of the TV for about 4 hours to absorb it all ....

It isn't necessary to get a new passport just because you're running out of pages. You can send your passport to the US Passport Agency and they will add new pages. I just did that and got my old passport back with about 20 new pages.
Check this link for information about adding new pages to your passport:

I did the same thing - had extra pages added - to a Canadian passport about 10 years ago. But the Canadian government would only do this if you were away from Canada at the time of the request (I was in Asia). Also, what with all the security crackdowns now and concern about asylum seekers, etc., governments might be reluctant to add pages.

US citizens can get extra pages abroad as well. I got 20 new pages added last week at my embassy for free. US Consular fees are uniform worldwide so this service should be free at every embassy or consualte.
Hope this helps,
Brian
