Thumbs up Permanent Import into South Africa

Hi all
This is my contribution to the process. We're importing a 1992 Toyota Landcruiser.

Various contact details needed and used

The South Africa Bureau of Standards (now referred to as NRCS for vehicle import)
Private Bag X192
Pretoria
0001
South Africa

Mr Paul Snyman
Tel: 012 428 6276
Fax: 012 344 1568
e: snymanpj@sabs.co.za

Mr Allen Cohen
Tel: 012 428 6891
Fax: 012 344 1568
e: cohenaj@sabs.co.za

The director of Import and Export Control
Trade and Industry

LoA
1st Dec 2008

Contact manufacturer in UK or overseas if imported vehicle

Phoned Toyota UK, not Toyota Motor UK
0845 275 5555
Got hold of Peter Jackson in charge of Imports/exports for Toyota GB
He only works on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday

2nd Dec 2008
He called me back on Tuesday 2nd December and requested my vehicle registration number
Read the following:
The car was manufactured (1992) before Toyota UK started producing Certificates of Conformity(1995). He can provide a Letter of Compliance, but I have to confirm with the SABS that they will accept this certificate. (See attachment for documents needed)

I then contacted Paul at SABS asking for the LoA application, but his out-of-office referred me to Charlotte Makou MAKOUCK@nrcs.org.za

3rd Dec 2008
Charlotte promptly replied with therequired documents attached .
Please note that the NRCS now handles LoA's.
Website: Nrcs - Home

Vehicles need different documentation depending on which year they were manufactured. I'll update in a while with the relevant attachment discussing these items.
Next will be the actual import permit... to follow...

Thanks

Hi Silvie

Thanks for all the info - we might go through the whole process end of next year with a Oz registered Landcruiser. Do you have any idea of how much all of this will cost, and was there anything you had to do before the car arrived in SA or any special docs etc you have to have before it arrives?

Cheers

Hey Pumbaa

I can only give advice if I get more information from you.
Do you plan to import the car to SA permanently?

Are you going through Africa or where will you be coming from and how?

I'm planning to attach the requirements document, but I'm having a little trouble with the size. Not fun...

Let me know
P.s... Dig your site...

Hi Silvie,

I am watching this thread with wide open eyes .
.
We (me and the mrs) are going to drive our UK Land Cruiser to Cape Town some time in 2010.
Our Land Cruiser will be staying in Cape Town, permanently with us
Her is SA born and bred, and I am permanent residence, so we hope to get away with the import duty, as 'Returning residents'
I have heard about the certificate from Toyota, £75 I believe it costs, and LoA, (costs about £138.00 for vehicle 1997 and newer) also carnet required to the last African country, but not including the common market of eastern and southern Africa , or some thing like that, (COMESA) ? as the carnet will end on the entry there.

So, I will be following so I can get all my stuff together for our 1 way trip.

LoA download here ----> http://www.nrcs.org.za/siteimgs/LOA%201.pdf

Pretty sure these guys went through that exact exercise a couple of years ago. I'd be surprised if things have changed since then.

Africa

We're doing it the opposite way. Leaving South Africa and settling in the UK, so any advice from someone who has done that would be welcome.

Thank you, dankie 'vette

We're (husband and me) leaving beginning March 2010. Maybe we'll catch up with you on the way.
Thanks for the extra information
I believe the import permit only lasts a certain amount of time. So don't apply too early.

Good Times

P.S Have you heard that Saffas don't need visa's for Gabon.
Check on Ons4 website, just type 'Ons 4' into Google and their website will appear first in the list.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
