Possible Tangle for Bike Purchased in South Africa.
OK, I am looking for a possible solution to take my bike out of South Africa, to another continent/country by either riding it and/or shipping it.
Problem is, I am Australian non-resident in South Africa, who visits each year and ride in South Africa and surrounding countries, done 5 trips now.
I bought the bike new there and have South African registration and also a permit issued that allows me to formally register any vehicle in South Africa in my name at any later date. In other words I am in their "system" as a legal customer, for vehicle ownership/registration purposes.
This is not a msg to try and see what I can get away with on Carnets etc.
I do need to know IF I can get a Carnet so I can take the bike elsewhere to a continent/country that requires one. Being Australian, having a South African purchased & registered bike may give me big problems in being able to get a Carnet, because the bike may not end up being shipped back to South Africa.
I am looking at possibly importing it to Australia in the long term, but for now I am looking to take it ultimately outside the African continent to ride in other places.
Financially, IF I have to cough up money, so be it.....the main thing is compliance with the legalities if possible, if not then I guess my other option is to sell it and walk.......THEN buy somewhere else.
