Renewing My UAE Carnet in the USA

I am on a RTW to and from Dubai, UAE and the one - year validity of my carnet expires on the 2nd June 2008. I am currently in Bolivia, heading north and aim to be in the United States sometime before the expiry date, insh'alla. I understand from the Touring Club of the UAE who issued my carnet in Abu Dhabi, that I can renew the carnet at any other national motoring organisation, i.e. the AAA in the United States.

I have two questions that I would really appreciate any other HUBBers advice and assistance.

Firstly, has anyone any experience of doing this, in particular with Arabic documents at the AAA in the USA?

Secondly, my current carnet has some national exclusions stamped on it, e.g. Egypt and Sudan. On my return to Dubai, I hope to travel through Egypt, Sudan, Eithiopia, Yemen and Oman. Is it possible for me to keep these exclusions off my new carnet without timely and expensive dealings with the original issuing authority in Abu Dhabi?

Thanks in advance for any advice and assistance you can offer,

Cheers,

Honesy.:confused1:

I am in the same boat

Hey Honesy,

I am in the same boat as you mate. I have an Omani carnet which expires in May of this year. But, I am in Tanzania now going south. What did you find out about extending them? I am an Auatralian citizen and have given up my residency for Oman so can't even register the bike any more either.

Any help would be apprieciated.

Cheers
Ivan

Waiting for more Info

Hi Ivan - as you can imagine, finding out info about this process is proving tortuous and I am waiting for replies to emails sent to the AAA in the USA and also the Arabian Touring Club in Abu Dhabi (who issued my original CDP).

As soon as I can find out more info, I will pass it on. If you can do the same that would be most appreciated. Watch this space!

Details from ATC on how to renew the CDP

Hi Ivan - as promised here is the update, hope it helps. I spoke to the dynamic Elie Fouad from Abu Dhabi Auto and touring club and he was reassuringly confident about the renewal of the Carnet de Passage - you need to take your old one to the AAA in the US, there are a number of branches - if you have a zip code you can find the nearest here: http://www.aaa.com/scripts/WebObjects.dll/ZipCode.woa/wa/route otherwise here are a couple of numbers

San Jose 001 408 371 5635
Florida 001 407 444 7223 (I think this is the HQ - there is also an email in case that helps mmiller@national.aaa.com)

I asked this guy 3 times the same question in various way and he remained steadfast that all you needed was the C de P (however given our decade of experience with UAE officials I would take the other usual docs with you - ppt, insurance etc)

I am happy to call again if there are more questions but keep the other details in case:

Arabian Touring Club
Elie Fouad
T - 00 971 2 621 21 75
F - 00 97 1 2 632 15 93
atcuae@emirates.net.ae
Atcuae.org - Motorsports Resources and Information. This website is for sale!

and another web site I saw while surfing for info on AAA:
BMW MOA : North America

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
