I am also looking into this at the moment, so would appreciate any further info. However, my preliminary research to date is that there are two options.
1. Import the bike into the UK for up to six months without using your carnet (and possibly longer if you seek an extension from customs). Under this scenario you keep your foreign rego and plates. In the event that you were to sell the bike, you would be hit with customs duty, which is either 6 or 8% depending on the capacity of the bike, and 17.5% VAT
2. Import and register the bike in the UK. To avoid paying customs duty you have to have lived outside the EU for 12 months and owned and registered the bike in another country for at least 6 months prior to bringing it to the UK. However, you are then restricted from selling the bike anywhere in the EU for the next twelve months. I think you also have to have the bike inspected, and they may require mph speedos and emission restriction requirements.
Would be interested to hear of any other options.
