You can travel / pass through with your bike for a long period of time, but over a year MAY be a problem - depending on your visa/green card status etc.
IF you were travelling - NOTHING would be required to be done except you need insurance. That's it. However, you are not usually allowed over a year.
You AREN'T travelling, so all bets are off - BUT you're not permanently importing either, so it's hard to be sure where they'll draw the lines.
For this long period, you'll have to do some research. Note that it varies considerably from state to state.
For over 6 months resident in most countries, you usually need to get a local drivers licence, but unlikely to need to take any tests. Even if you had to take a drivers test, no worries, it's MUCH easier than the UK test!
