Spanish and USA pasports issued new #s
Just when I thought we were legal to cross the border during our ride from Buenos Aires, Argentina to Viña del Mar, Chile and return, I learned
that if you purchased a motorcycle in Argentina and used a USA or Spanish passport as ID for the purchase while a foreign tourist in Argentina , and then legally became a permanent foreign resident of Argentina (with DNI that permits the temporary export of Argentine registered vehicles or motos) and attempted to cross the border with a "renewed passport" NOTE: unlike Argentina and other SA countries, USA and Spain issue new pasport numbers for each passport renewal, there might be a problem because the passport number used to for the purchase will be differedt, if renewed from the passport number presented at the border.
NO kidding, I had to do some fancy footwork to convince the Argentine border official that Elisa´s bike belonged to her even though she was now traveling on a Spanish passport with a number different from the passport number she used to purchase her bike.
I used only my Argentine DNI and had no problem although my USA pasport had also been renewed and issued a new #.
THanks to the fact that I also have a green card for Elisa´s moto as she also has one for my moto, I was able to cross her bike out of Argentina. Entering Chile was no problem once we survived Argentine requirements.
Solution: Upon isuance of a new pasport with a numer different from your previous pasport get a translated letter from your consul stating that the renewed pasport # was isued to the holder of the old passport #.
Xfiltrate on the coast of Chile life is good, very good
