Question To extend the Carnet

This question has probably been asked but I cannot find the answer,

We are motorbike travellers from Australia, our Carnet expires early next year, we are now in Europe and are heading to more non-carnet countries. Do we just let the carnet expire or do we have to extend it even though it is not necessary to have one?:confused1:
Thanks in Advance

I let my carnet to expire. If your carnet is closed (last entry has also exit stamp), then you do not need to worry. You can just agree with the authority (who gave carnet to you) that you might apply new carnet later on during the trip (they keep your money so that you do not need to repay it again).

At least this worked with ADAC

Answer to Expired Carnet

No Kei,

But have since had an email from the RACQ in Australia,

This is how it works:

1. You cannot sell the bike if it under a Carnet, you must surrender the bike to Customs, if you sell it you must pay the duty, in the country sold

2. You can either get an extension done on your carnet- you can get 3 month, 6 month or 12 monthly ones where you pay an extension fee along with the extra insurance indemnity to cover the extended months, you would need to contact an automobile club that carnets are required to facilitate this process.

Or

3. You can continue travelling with an expired carnet in countries where a carnet is not required, however you would need to organise prior to shipping your bikes back to Australia with an authorised and licenced customs broker to import your vehicle back in as they will not accept your bikes back in Australia if your carnet has expired. The only time they accept an expired carnet coming back into Australia, is when the carnet expires when the bike or vehicle is in transit on its way back to Australia.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
