I'd have to agree that TC have had their day.

I went from the Uk to the USA for 5 months. i found travellers checks pain in the butt to cash... one bank (called citibank i think) refused to cash them because i don't have an account with them:confused1:.
The AMEX travel offices are light on the ground i.e. nothing in San Diego!! I had to keep going into banks to find one to cash them. Bank of America changed them in the end but it was the second bank of America i tried.
I once got away with using them at Walmart. But on the whole it was a head wreaking idea

The USA is a great place to travel around, with fantastic roads and cheap accommidation ( go Motel 6!) but it's not set up like Europe. Everything is aimed at the domestic tourist. So some things can be a bit more difficult than a European trip.

Have a good ún!

I have no idea why people still use TCs use a prepaid credit card, or a check card. I only used the 2 times selling them is a pain if you get a new teller at a bank and many shops wont take them. The cards pop them in to a bank ATM and you have that nation cash, sell the rest at the border ever try to sell a TC at the border I got sum funny looks.

And the US $ looks to still be sliding. Some times I want to do bad things to my "leaders"

Travelers Cheques are coming in for some bad reviews here. I don’t mind at all, but keep an open mind, in some situations they can work out good value. You need to look at the options and some research to find out what works in the places you are traveling to.

On a recent trip to New Zealand we wanted to buy a motor home and motorcycle and TC worked out a good way of taking a large sum.
In NZ & OZ the banks offer a better exchange rate for TC over cash. The down side to this is TC can cost 0.5% commission to buy. If you can get them without paying commission (See 1st post) and a better exchange rate when you cash them you win win. TC used to get a better exchange rate in europe as well, I don't know if this still the case.

Xanders tip about the post office debit card has some good points, may add it to our armory. Limited risk, low cost and it should not suffer from being cancelled for unusual transactions like a credit card or debit card.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
