US insurance problems

Hi. I'm a UK citizen hoping to travel to the US in July or August for a 2-3 month tour. A friend of mine living in New Jersey has offered me the use of his spare bike (Suzuki GS250. Hey - it's free!) on the condition that I insure it. I've tried Motorcycle Express and Progressive but no luck so far. I'm told bikes registered in NJ can be a problem to insure.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Try going to your friends' company directly. Have an international permit which makes them feel better and proves that your Dr. Lic. issuing country is part of the International Convention which grants reciprocal driving privilliges to participating countries. You may have to get your friend to cancel the policy to get a refund of the un earned portion of the policy.
AND...
Do you know of a company offering recovery insurance, I'm using a friends bike in Europe this year and he wants recovery on it. I tried Green Flag, no go for bikes.
Good luck, I'll ask around a bit further.

Thanks for that. Since my first posting we've decided that re-registering the bike in another state might be a better way to go. He has realtives all over, we've settled on Pennsylvania.

European recovery insurance - how long will you be in the UK/Europe for? which countries will you be visiting? I used to have a 12 month policy with the RAC which also covered me for Europe but I think they only do cover for individual trips (to Europe) now. I'll have a look and get back to you. How old is the bike you'll be riding? Sometimes older bikes can be a problem.

Hello again,

Just been checking the RAC's website. They provide annual cover for western Europe (beasically the EU countries plus a few others) for £95. This assumes the bike is over 125cc and less than 11 years old. The website states you need to be a UK resident but I assume you'll have a UK address? They'll cover you for western Europe plus the other European countries for £145.

This cover doesn't include UK cover but this would be quite a cheap add-on.

Hope this helps.

Rich

Thanks, got it organized. As luck has it It's a 92 Triumph Trophy so there is an add on despite it only having 10K on the clock.
Good luck with your trip. If you're north to Canada, I'm on the Eastern Edge at Newfoundland.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
