VAT in europe - where is the cheapest VAT on buying a bike i

Please help on this VAT tax question:

I plan on travelling to europe to buy a motorcycle then drive to asia. where is the place with the least VAT on buying a motorcycle? my final destination is Hong Kong, so can I get the VAT refunded as I am exporting the bike? What do I need to demonstrate and what is the paperwork like to get the VAT refunded?

When you're buying a bike in (for example) the Netherlands and you want to register it on your name and drive it, it is still a dutch bike, and you can drive it anywhere.

If you're exporting it and want the VAT back, then it's no longer a Dutch bike and you can't drive it

thanks freek, cant i drive the bike out of the holland (driving it requires it to be registered) within a certain fixed period of time and then apply to get the vat back when it reaches its final destination? say could i register the bike in the netherlands, drive it to hong kong, register it in hong kong get the VAT back?

Also what is the vat tax for bikes in holland? germany? uk? italy? estonia? and finland? not that i would expect anyone to know this trivia, but i have friends in all these locations and can therefore use their address as my address for registration purposes.

thanks for the continued help.

Holland/Netherlands 19%
Germany 17 %

Bikes are 10-15 % cheaper in Germany. if you have friends there, maybe they could help you with the register-problem.

Witch bike are you looking for ?

... in GERMAN, of course!

To the best of my knowledge Germany has a system of temporary, export-only rego. I have never used it, but I think you pay no VAT on a new vehicle, but must leave Germany within a very short time. Ask your friends in Germany to find out the current details.

Careful, though, if you intend to spend lots of time in Europe, as the insurance will be expensive.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
