Vehicle Title

This will be obvious to many of you on this forum, so please forgive the elementary question.

We are planning a trip from Canada through Central and South America. The only paperwork that I have for our vehicle is our Provincial Registration that is renewed every year. In New Brunswick we are not issued with any other official ownership documentation.

What other documentation will I need for proof of ownership at the different border crossings?

Thanks for your help.

Do you get a title of any kind when you buy a vehicle? You will probably need something that proves you own the bike and has the frame number on it. If you can't get something official you should make one on your computer and use that.

Thanks for the reply.

Our Vehicle Registration Certificate has the owner's name, address and vehicle details (Make, Model, Year, VIN). To transfer 'ownership' to another individual all we need to do is complete the back of this wallet size document. The word Title does not appear anywhere on this wallet size Vehicle Registration.

However I get the sense from reading this forum that a much more detailed document is required.

In addition to my Alberta registration document I carry copies of my original bill of sale (sales slip/invoice) from the dealer I purchased the bike from.

I used this when obtaining my Temporary Vehical Import Permit for Mexico with no dificulties.

Bill ... thanks for the great tip. I'll dig that up as I purchased the bike new from the Moncton BMW dealer.

If I could ask, is that the experience of others traveling beyond Mexico?

Title Documents

For the benefit of others that might be reading this, I contacted the Provincial Motor Vechicle Branch and confirmed that there are no title documents available in New Brunswick. After explaining the trip and request for this document, I did obtain a letter explaining this on official letterhead. I'll carry this with us on our trip. Robert

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
