Im in the planning stages too..
From what I've heard you get the Turkey visa at the border... The syrian one in London, the Jordan one at the border...
You get Eypian visa on arrival then sort your Sudanese and Ethiopian visas at the embassys in Cairo..
After that, all visas are granted at the borders...
And yes, you DO need a carnet.
Please correct me if im wrong.

The guy who runs the Africa 4x4 site (BunduBasher on here I think) has some good insights to carnet's on here. He has traveled around southern Africa many times and says you need a carnet. Some countries don't require them, but it works out cheaper to have one for those countries anyway, instead of paying for TIP's in each place. But even then, some countries require them, so you need it regardless.
In that same thread, someone on a bike said they never got asked for it. I think on bikes people are more relaxed, but it's still better to be prepared incase they do ask for it.

carnets
if you are based in the UK just contact Paul Gowen at the RAC. he is very helpful and has all the information at his finger-tips. Egypt is the bug bear...they require 500 % of the value of your bike so I understand. and you WILL need one.
have fun with the planning.

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
