Across the bay of bengal
Anyone got any idea about catching a cargo boat for me and my bike across the bay of bengal to Thailand. Has anyone managed it and if so how? Im travelling rtw for charity without using planes, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jonny

The times have changed, very few passenger ferries crossing the seas anymore.

And much harder these days to get to go along on any cargo boats, too. Problem with illegal immigration, and the ´war against terror´ arent making that any easier in the future.

We travelled with a Czech couple in Iran & Pakistan, and they said they knew about a ferry (or some kind of vessel, where you can put your vehicle - they had a 4x4, and you can travel on the same boat) between Chennai and Singapore.

They even had an Indian cellphone number to someone, who was supposed to know more, and I tried to call there a couple of times, but no answer.
No-one in Chennai knew anything about such a service. Frankly, I dont think it exists. Someone said there once was a regular ferry to Penang (Malaysia) but that was in the 1980´s.

Sure it might be worth to ask around, if you got time then who knows, maybe you can find some suitable ship going the right way at the right time, accepting to take you and the bike, but its still a slim chance. Freighting the bike & flying yourself is the normal way to go these days (a big hassle, I know!)

I think there is a ferry from Chennai (and maybe from near Kolkata, too?) to the Andaman&Nicobar islands. That is a lot closer to Thailand and Malaysia than mainland India is. But how do you get onwards from there, I really have no idea. And if you end up freighting the bike from there, that is probably going to cost more than if you did that in Chennai or Kolkata, for example.

I also need to ship out of Chennai mid-August. I have already bought a plane ticket, so I just need to organise crating and shipping for the bike. Anyone have a reliable contact in Chennai for this?

The cargo vessel Tiger Breeze is taking up to 12 passengers from Chennai to Singapore (or Port Klang/Kuala Lumpur). I don't know with vehicles, but it's probably possible. You find information here:

one-way tickets 1100-1400 USD, depending on which direction you go... and they´ll probably charge you something for the vehicle, too. Take 5-6 days one way.

You can airlift the bike from India to Malaysia or Singapore cheaper. The only possible plus with this might be, if you dont need to crate the bike (if they accept it at all, that is). But thanks for the info, its good to know about such an option anyway. Maybe this is what our travel companions were referring to.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
