air frieghting bike from india to south africa?

Hello,
I am planning to air freighting my bike from Chennai/Bangalore/Mumbai to South Africa in march or April of 2011. I have found only one travel agent who has assured me, he can do it. He has even sent an estimated cost...But, I am wondering if the price is right.

Cost= packing cost + fumigation cost + 70000Rs.(ard 1100 euros).
Has anyone freighted to SA from India?.how was the experience?
Any info at all would be great.

While I am ready to pay if its a genuine price, just that I don't want get ripped off at the start of my first big trip.

Thanks in advance.
Pare.

Without the dimensions & weight of your crate, it´s really hard to say, if the price mentioned is okay or not.

But just for reference, I payed around 600 euros total to airlift a DL650 from Chennai to Bangkok 3 years ago. I dont have the exact figures right here, but I would think that the package was about 2,5 cubic meters, and ~300kg. That was a direct flight time of around 3,5 hours (but it went with Malaysia Airlines, so changed plane in Kuala Lumpur).

Btw, you sure that you wont´t need an agent to do the paperwork & clear the customs? That side of things did seem a bit complicated, and I probably couldn´t have done it all by myself (or would´ve spent a couple weeks more in Chennai, I think!!)

Hello Pecha72,
Thanks for sharing the info. And sorry for not replying for a long time.
I think I will need to go through an agent. I think india to south africa should be only a slight increase from what it costed you. By any chance do you remember any of the contact details or agent details?
I am getting to hear that there are only two agents in chennai who are well versed with shipping bikes.
Thanks in advance.
Pare.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
