Auckland to Vladivostok
Hi people,

Just in the intial stages of planning a trip for either 2012 or 2013 Vlad to London.
Looking at various options to ship two bikes to Vlad from Auckland and then fly out when i had a thought .... is it possible to travel on the same boat as the bikes go on? i mean that would make sense, and could be cheaper than flying?

anyone have any thoughts about this? and also about the possible option to ship to Korea and then get the ferry?
any contacts or links to shipping companies that can do that route would be good as well.

Hey WN,

Cargo ships very rarely take passengers so getting to Vlad on the same ship as your bike would not be likely.

You can cargo into Vlad or Korea and fly and meet your bike there. If you chose Korea, you would then have to ferry to Vlad from Korea which would add that incremental cost. There are some detailed reports on here on how to do it, how much the truck and the ferry costs etc. , so you could easily compare the shipping costs into either port, add on the additional costs for Korea and determine which is more cost effective. Clearing customs in Vlad is more hassle, but certainly doable with the right amount of appreciation for Russian bureaucracy. Happy planning.

in 2008 I shipped my bike to Korea from Melbourne. I had the option of shipping to Vladivostok but the additional amount was just about equal to the cost of the ferry fare from Korea to Vladivostok and I could also not get direct flights to Vladivostok.

As MM has pointed out, cargo ships have not taken passengers for over 30 years so you will have to fly yourself anyway. It will take 4-6 weeks for your bike to ship to Korea and allow a further 1-2 weeks tor Vladivostok (no one ships direct from Australia /NZ to Vladivostok so any cargo has to change ships in Korea).

To give you an idea, I shipped Melbourne to Busan, flew to Vietnam (cheapest flight out of Australia), rented a bike in Vietnam, crossed to China, bought a bike and rode around for a month, sold it in Shanghai and flew to Busan, collected my bike then rode up the Korean Peninsula to Sokcho to catch the ferry to Vlad.

The opportunity to ride in Korea was well worth the small additional cost for temporary importation and insurance.
