Bangkok custom clearance?
Anyone has experience with the custom clearance of a bike by air in Bangkok?
We were informed that there are apparently some 'difficulties' with the customs there. Don't know what the issue should be and if it is just a money thing.
We are shipping from Ulaan Bataar in Mongolia and it would be great to hear any info.
Thanks,
Tijs

my bike was airlifted to BKK from Chennai in Jan-2008. I don´t recall having any major problems at the airport, and it took maybe 2-3 hours until we got the crate on a pickup, and then went to a nearby gasoline station to put the bike back on its wheels.
I did have someone with me who speaks Thai, and that helped quite a bit. Probably not 100% necessary, and more or less all papers were bilingual, but surely made things easier.
I´ve heard bad stories about the BKK seaport. Especially back then I was warned not to ship anything there by sea. But of course it could all be different now.

Despite being told by a couple of airport employees that it was not possible I cleared my bike myself. It took some time and involved visiting many offices to get stamps but everybody spoke English and was helpful. Make sure you actually deal with a customs officer not some other employee who will offer to help for a fee, I met somebody who had paid $100. As has been stated you can build the bike up at the airport.

Ub to bkk
Hi, shipping from UB to Bangkok I am using Landbridge this coming week. For contact details search Baigalmaa on HUBB and there is only one thread. (If I knew how to create a link I would have done so!)
I will post experiences when I have actually done the shipping. Quote is 3500 US so not cheap but we shall see.

import agent
Thanks for the useful replies.
Does anyone have details of a local agent that can help with the customs?
The bike also needs to go to a local shop after clearing.
Cheers,
Tijs

We shipped our bikes from Kathmandu to Bangkok in November 2010. Some people we knew had done the same route a few months earlier and had recommended that we get a 'local expert' to help us for a 'small fee'. In the end we did it ourselves and didn't have the slightest hint of a problem. Bangkok airport is pretty regulated.
Just go over to the customs building and they'll get you started. Everyone spoke good English and couldn't have been more helpful, and when you're done they give you good directions on where to go next.
There are a few guys sitting outside one of the buildings who will 'guide' you through it all for a fee but you really don't need anyone.
All in all it was a pretty pleasant experience compared to some other countries.

Matey,
I use Dynamic Motors to service my bike when I was in Bangkok. They seem to be able to work on most big bikes and are a short walk from the Kao San Road area:
