Bike as "sports baggage" on a Airplain

I was just reading some thing interesting in a German outdoor magazine about preparation for any flight trips, like all this common thinks like "don't forget your Passport" and preparation in time before entering the Airport..

They saying that Airlines normally allow bulky "sports baggage" for transport on a plain for about 50-Euros around the world, if arranged up front.
Any "sports baggage" like Kayaks with several meter in length, bicycles,
diving gear and other stuff can be arranged to put on a plain for shipping wold wide as long as it fits in to the plain and is acknowledged as "sports baggage" !

Well.... how about to declare a WRT bike as "sports baggage" rather than a "vehicle" or "heavy luggage" which will cost a lot more......

The recommendation is to talk to the Airline to find a way to convince them that your bike is a "sports baggage" you need to do what ever you do to enjoy your "sports riding" like a mountain biker need his "wire donkey" to play around on muddy tracks far away from home....

Would be interesting to know how others managed to do this and experience as such... to fit a bike in a Airplain.

If you do manage to get them to agree to it, you will have all sorts of fun and games as they will categorise it as dangerous goods.

Thumbs down News from BA

I fully expect that there is a weight limit! Also, Dangerous Air Cargo (DAC) rules come into it when fuel tanks and other fluids are involved.
However, anything is worth a try!

Today, British Airways (BA) have implemented reduced limits on the weight of bags, and the number of bags, that can travel as part of the normal passenger ticket.
In addition they have effectively banned most water activities by now refusing to transport canoes, surfboards, windsurfers and some other kit such as hang-gliders. Golf clubs are OK though (!!) + bicycles (small mercy there). The British Surfing Association are lobbying BA as I type.

You just have to love BA!!!

I almost managed to get my bike as "hand luggage" from Chad to Ethiopia. Everything (almost) was ready but then Ethiopian airlines in Addis made problems. ("That's a very big scooter sir")

If they just took the helmet, jacket, pants, gloves and boots are 'sports luggage' I'd be happy (er) .. amazing how heavy things are when you are not waring them.

I've flown with a bicycle .. not too much of a problem .. no charge ..

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
