Buying used bike in South Africa for travel north
After checking out prices (including destination charges, waiting for the bike in RSA or paying fees for late pick-up, high crating costs and bother, lead-time, and over-all hassle factor I have pretty much decided to just buy a bike in South Africa for my next trip from there through southern and east Africa and doing a loop around Lake Victoria back to SA through Namibia, taking approximately 4 months to do it. I will also hope to avoid the additional expense and bother of the carnet and just see what I can do without it (looks like Egypt and Sudan and South Africa itself, if importing, are the main roadblocks to this).
I was going to do this last year but ran into some time-occupying adventures in Canada.
So, has anyone out there recently go through the process of finding, purchasing, registering, and insuring a bike in South Africa? Would sure love to hear from you.
I see that bikes are readily available in SA but cost a little more than in Canada for the same used bike (e.g. 250 to 650 dual purpose), but then there are no shipping costs and no carnet that would go with shipping a bike from Canada.
Cheers,
Larry
