Customs clearance in Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan

Hi all, I'm hoping someone can help.

I'm planning a trip Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan in June and July. The plan is to fly the bikes to Almaty or Bishkek, tour around and the ride back to the UK. Visas and bike transport are arranged but I'm worried about the formalities of customs clearance when we come to pick up the bikes. I don't want to get delayed for days by red tape with the bikes stuck in customs. The trouble is, I'm having a really hard time finding a customs agent who will help with the formalities. I just want to pay someone to present me with my bike outside customs with the correct paperwork so I can ride off into the mountains.

Anyone had any experience with this and can offer some advice?

Thanks,

:confused1: Gareth

customs in Almaty

Hi there,

my information is out of date, because I flew my bike into Almaty in May 2000 ... but still I want to tell you to avoid flying it into Almaty. It took me six full days to get it out, with a lot of problems, bribes, lawyers, translators and the help of the German consulate. It was very bad then, but I dont know what it is now, but I would never fly a bike into Almaty again.

I dont know your time schedule, but maybe send it with a truck ... just an idea.

good luck and enjoy your trip

Fly it to Bishkek, i have a good friend there who imports for a living and is also a trained lawyer who could help

Almaty cost to much to stay as its not a cheap city and for Kazak you need a visa where as for KGZ you dont and its alot cheaper

If you are on facebook add me and i will put you in touch with my KGZ friend on there to help you out

Gareth, please let us know the results of your enquiries.

See, a couple of other HUBBers and I are looking to air-freight our bikes from New Delhi to Bishkek around May-15th.

It would be great to deal with a reliable English-speaking agent at the other end.

All the best

Keith
