Darwin to Dili Feb 2014
Looking to ship my bike from Darwin to Dili, East Timor some time in February 2014.
Toll Group (Formerly Perkins Shipping) has yet to issue departure dates for early next year but I have requested a schedule for Jan/Feb.
I'm flexible on dates and as this is the first leg of my RTW trip I'm looking for fellow riders to potentially share a container.
If anyone's interested, or in the area around then, let me know
Cheers,
Tim

Hey Tim,
I'll be doing the same thing around the end of feb, Darwin-Dili, on my way to UK. No dates yet, but keen to keep the costs down as it's the start of my journey too. Drop me a line closer to the time.

Hi Tim,
Back in 2010 Perkins gave me a flat fee for a motorbike from Darwin to Dili, I think about $360. Is this no longer available from Toll? I'm interested as I'm now planning my return trip from Europe.
Regards,
Mark

Hi Marks,
I received a response from Toll, appears to be a $350 flat rate for a motorcycle uncrated. (AUD $95 per weight Tonne - min $350) + fuel surcharge $20 & then local fees on top of that.
It may work out cheaper crate-ing it but I would rather roll-on-roll-off to avoid the hassle of getting a crate and disassembling the bike etc.
No shipping dates for Feb yet but the December dates for Dili cargo are the 10th and the 31st with cargo cut-off dates about a week before.
Cheers,
Tim

Hi guys, just one word of advise: don't rely on the schedule Toll gives you. They change it almost every day.... we had to wait 3 weeks for our bikes to arrive. And they had changed the shipping date already before several times....
If you want to know more, have a look at our blog. Finally – our bikes have arrived! | 2 Live The Dream
Unfortunatley there is no alternative to Toll.
And regarding the costs: there are also additional handling fees that you have to pay in addition to the shipping itself.
Good luck!

Hi all,
As Heike said, you need to be flexible with your schedule, because Toll schedule will change.
I did this trip the other way round few months ago and wrote the process and prices to my blog (R1200GS) Process to get bike from Dili to Darwin | Where is Hemuli?

Our experience shipping with Toll was similar.
We shipped two Yamaha XT250 from Darwin to Dili in October 2013. I can also vouch for the ridiculous and frustrating changes to schedules. Our original departure date was pushed back by a month by Toll, but often only by a week at a time, so you thought, yep good to go, and then they'd delay again. The waste of time and money as a result of this is still frustrating. Be aware of this, and that Darwin is really expensive (and we were camping in a caravan park)! Litchfield NP is stunning though and if you're camping, reasonably cheap, it's less than 150km away.
We also opted for the roll on roll off option and it ended up costing us $450AUD per bike. Pretty sure we were quoted $350 as a base fee. Added on were fuel surcharges, East Timor tax, port service security, port service charge. All of the fees, except the East Timor tax were an amount multiplied by your bikes cubic metre measurement, so the smaller you can make it the better.
There aren't any other alternatives to Dili that we could find either. There were rumours of people shipping to Bali, maybe from Perth or Darwin. But I can highly recommend seeing both East Timor and Flores and the other more easterly islands in Indonesia - if you can afford the potential for delays.
Having said all that the bikes did arrive safely. We watched the Toll guys in Dili do a great job of getting them out of the container and the Darwin guys had done a fantastic job of tying the bikes down.
All the best and good luck with it.
