Ferry from Persian Gulf to India ?

Hello, just in case it gets too wild in Pakistan by mid-October that were planning to go thru there on our way to India, Im trying to find out if there are any alternatives. I´ll probably have to arrange a ship- or airfreight for the bike from India onwards anyway, so I would like to avoid doing so to get to India, if possible.

A friend, whos done some big trips in the 1970´s gave a hint that there could be a passenger ferry from Iran (or somewhere in the Gulf region anyway) going to Mumbai, or anywhere else in India... I tried to google, but its not easy to find it, if there is one. Im afraid his information might not be up to date.

Anyone have any info on such ferry routes.. a confirmation that such routes do not exist, would help me, too?

Not as far as I know

The boom in air transport providers in the countries around the Gulf and India has put an end to most of the ferries. The main ferries that used to travel between India and the Gulf were all put out of business by their governments when the various air-services agreements were signed. The last of the major ferries (from Kerala, where most of the Indian workers employed in the Gulf states are from, and Chennai) were cancelled when deals were struck to use Chennai as a hub for flights between East Asia and the Middle East, and flights were increased to Kerala. Kerala is booming as a result (mostly at the cost of Goa) and that state is not pushing for a return of the ferry. Most Indians can now fly around the Gulf for little more than the original boat cost. It looks like the ferries are gone for good.

cheers
Brett

Thats exactly what I was afraid the answer would be. But thank you for clarifying that anyway! This makes me hope even more, that Pakistan actually is do-able when I´ll finally get going...

Same situation here

Hi there,
a friend and I are also doing the "Hippietrail" right now. From Denmark, we're moving to Bosnia from Croatia tomorrow.
We don't know what is reasonable about going through paki, especially beluchistan...
Maybe you could write a PM so we could discuss stuff?
I wonder what air shipping could cost from say shiraz to delhi...

Kindest regards,
Stephan

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
