Just to round it off:
LTU uses their own pallets, so you don't need to organise a crate. This is esp. useful if your return flight is from a different airport than the point of entry - like CT / WHK.
Unfortunately I haven't got any alternative freight information. For comparison: to ship my bike from Melbourne to Hamburg cost me (one-way) roundabout € 1100. I presume the price from Italy to Cape Town won't differ that much. So shipping your bike down and back will be slightly cheaper, but the timing is much easier and IMO it is far safer to airfreight it.
